Writing down lecture notes and readings in our own words.

☆ WHY DO WE TAKE NOTES?☆
. Pay attention
. Study for quiz
. Improve memory
. Take ownership of ideas
. Engage our senses
. Organize and process data

☆ WHY DO WE NEED TO REVIEW NOTES? ☆
. Humans will lose 80% of information once it is not reviewed in 48 hours
. Identify question
. Test knowledge

☆WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO AS A STUDENT?

BEFORE CLASS
review the notes from the day before
review your reading assingnments
make sure you have paper, text, pens/pencils, handout
write the date at the top of your paper for notes
leave spaces between the lines so that you can add information later

PHYSICAL FACTORS
1. Seating
• near the front and center for better vision and hearing
2. Avoid distractions
• peers, doorways, window glare, etc

HOW DO WE TAKE NOTES?
date and label notes
give ourselves space to write
use abbreviations and symbols
use an outline to show main ideas, supports, examples
use or own language

HOW DO WE PREPARE FOR CLASS
do prereading and homework
review syllabus
preview previous notes
look up key words prior to class
plan on listening 80% of the time
write the date at the top of your paper for notes
leave spaces between the lines so that you can add information later

WHILE TAKING NOTES 
be an aggresive, not a passive listener
ask questions and discuss if its permitted
if not permitted, jot questions in your notes and seek out meaning later
