. Humans will lose 80% of information once it is not reviewed in 48 hours
. Identify question
. Test knowledge

☆WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO AS A STUDENT?

BEFORE CLASS
review the notes from the day before
review your reading assingnments
make sure you have paper, text, pens/pencils, handout
write the date at the top of your paper for notes
leave spaces between the lines so that you can add information later

PHYSICAL FACTORS
1. Seating
• near the front and center for better vision and hearing
2. Avoid distractions
• peers, doorways, window glare, etc

HOW DO WE TAKE NOTES?
date and label notes
give ourselves space to write
use abbreviations and symbols
use an outline to show main ideas, supports, examples
use or own language

MEMORY LEARNING & IMPROVING CONCENTRATION - BY MISS NURUL INFAZA TALALAH BINTI RAMLI

J UNDERSTANDING MEMORY PROCESS J

WHAT IS MEMORY?☆
- Ability of an individual to encode, store and retrieve information

☆WHAT IS BRAIN?☆
- An organ is human or animal body that serves as the central nervous system
- More than 100billion that communicate with trillions of connections called synapses

Do you know how much of the information that we could get when we do these?

Lecturesà 5%
Readingà 10%Audio visualà 20%
Demonstrationà 30%
Discussionà 50%
Practiceà 75%
Teaching othersà 90%

There are 3 types of memory :-

☆SENSORY MEMORY☆
-Sensory memory is the shortest-term element of memory. It is the ability to retain impressions of sensory information after the original stimuli have ended.

☆SHORT TERM MEMORY☆
- Short term memory is the capacity for holding, but not manipulating, a small amount of information in mind in an active, readily available state for a short period of time.

☆LONG TERM MEMORY☆
- Long term memory is the type of memory responsible for the storage of information for an extended period of time.

ACTUALLY, WHY DO WE FORGET ?

  • ·         Distraction
  • ·         Focus
  • ·         Time factor
HOW TO ENSURE US TO EASILY REMEMBER ?

  •            Repetition
(read the books or article that contains the information many times)

  •    Rehearsal
(do exercises or handouts given by the teachers or lecturers after we have done reading all the information. Past year questions are also recommended)

J MEMORY STRATEGIES J
There are many ways of how we want to remember or memorise any information such as :-
o   Storytelling / Discussion
o   Acronyms
o   Pocket notes
o   Flash cards
o   Mind-mapping
o   Songs / Poem

☆HOW TO IMPROVE STRATEGY?☆

1. MASSED PRACTICE
- compressed everything at one time
- not recommendable as students wont have enough time to understand, stressful
- example: last-minute study
2. SPACED PRACTICE
- involves space time over some period of time for studying
- allows enough time for information to consolidate in Long Term Memory
- recommendable and the most effective
3. REHEARSAL STRATEGIES
- practicing material
- example: handouts, exercise, past year question
- involves repetition
4. ELABORATION STRATEGIES
-there are many ways such as:-
a. acronyms or catchphrase
an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words and pronounced as a word
b. acrostics
a poem, word puzzle, or other composition in which certain letters in each line form a word or words.
c.mnemonic
a system such as a pattern of letters, ideas, or associations which assists in remembering something
d. images
use images that contains info and uses a colourful image to enhance memories

☆CAUSES OF POOR CONCENTRATION☆
. Lack of attention
. Lack in motivation
. Lack of interest
. Distraction from others
. Uncomfortable environment
. Psychological matters (personal, worries, anxiety)
. Physiological matters (illness, tiredness)
. Uncomfortable environment (heat, cold)

USE SQ3R. BUT, WHAT IS SQ3R THOUGH?

QUESTION : make questions for your own
READ : read back in details
RECITE : read again while making notes
REVIEW :  remember the important information

(UED 102 STUDY SKILLS) BY MISS NURSURIA BINTI MD. SETAMAM

:) GETTING READY TO LEARN (:
As we all aware, enrolling in a university or college means that we have took one step further in our journey of life and one step leaving our comfort zone. I know some of us come from a boarding school but I am sure that most of the students come from a daily school. And yes, we will confront everything with the word new in front of it- new setting, new circle of friends, new lifestyle and new teachers or lecturers what we call them here.- So, how do we endure this? Here comes the important part.
Firstly, we have to identify the differences between the life in secondary school and university.

Secondly, adaptation skills are needed after we have identified all the differences. As the theory of Charles Darwin about adaptation said, it is not the most intellectual of the species that survives (it is not the strongest that survives) but the species that survives is the one that is able to adapt to and to adjust best to the changing environment in which it finds itself. Look at how important for us to know the adaptation skills. But, what are the steps to adaptation? Here, I have listed a few steps on how to adapt well with new environment :-

1. Set a positive mindset about everything new that you will have to face.
2. Make new friends as this will slowly but surely help you to overcome homesickness.
3. Bear in mind that you are working your way towards your ambition *thumbs up*
**or you can also read these steps to adapt to the timetable in university (as the classes' schedule might be a little bit different from the secondary school)
1.Plan ahead for those first few lectures by making sure you know where you need to be and when. This way you won’t stress yourself out by getting lost or being late.
2. Make sure you have plenty of stationary (there will be a lot of note taking) and learn to take good notes.
3. If you are given a module outline in the first lecture make sure you read it through so you can be prepared for what’s to come. Take note of suggested readings, it doesn’t ever hurt to read too much.
4. Manage your time. Try to get yourself into a study routine, working this around your other commitments and activities. Familiarise yourself with the library, with all the independent learning this is a very handy place to know about.
5. If you are worried about how to adapt to the university with the way of learning, don't panic! Ask for help from your friends, seniors or even lecturers and it is way better if you know your lecturers or academics advisor well. Everyone, please remember to always work SMART. What is SMART?

Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Time-based

and that's all for the adaptation skills. Moving on, we might also face a few challenges as we are moving to this new setup such as:-

1. Bad time management/Procrastination
2. Speed lecture
3. Test anxiety
4. Comprehension issues
but don't worry too much as the university provides help for all of the students. If any of us need help, let's just take a walk to the Students' Affairs building or the Counselling centre *wink wink*

:) GOALS SETTING (:
Goals? What does that means? Is it something that we might need for our future? Do we really have to have a goal for ourselves? What effect does goals have towards our journey in university? These questions might linger in our mind as we heard the word GOALS. Let's take a look at the definition of goal:-

1. (in football, rugby, hockey, and some other games) a pair of posts linked by a crossbar and typically with a net between, forming a space into or over which the ball has to be sent in order to score.
2. The object of a person's ambition or effort; an aim or desired result.
As in our cases, we are talking about the second definition of goal. Or in a more simple meaning, goal means the end towards which we direct our effort or what we want to achieve in life. There are 2 types of goals; academic and personal goals. As you can see, to achieve our goal, it comes along with an effort and our goal(s) should have some characteristics in which those characteristics are:-

1. Self choosen
--> if our goal is something that we have no interest into, we would find it less attractive to put our effort on it let alone to accomplish it.
2. Moderately challenging
--> setting a high sky goal is okay but do acknowldege our own ability as we are the one who are going to put all of our effort into completing the tasks to reach our goal.
3. Realistic and Measurable
--> set up a realistic and measurable goal where you can see the path that you need to take in order to reach your goal.
4. Specific
--> be specific with your goal so you won't get drifted away from the right path of reaching your goal.
5. Positive
--> having a positive goal is a must! why would we have a negative goal right? A positive goal will boost up your spirit on your way to reach the goal you have carefully setup.
6. Finite
--> this means to have limits or bounds. Always remember to have limits when we put our effort towards getting to our goal. Reaching our goal as quick as we can is our definite achievement but let it be within our limitations. Do work our way to our goal slowly but surely.

Some examples of academic goals:-
1. Getting a 4.00 pointer for every semester
2. Being listed in the Dean List
3. Graduate

Some examples of personal goals:-
1. Getting your dream job
2. Getting your dream car and house
3. Go travelling at any part of world that you want
So, let's start planning our goals! J

:) TIME MANAGEMENT & ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS (:

Time is
Too Slow for those who Wait,
Too Swift for those who Fear,
Too Long for those who Grieve,
Too Short for those who Rejoice;
But for those who Love,
Time is not.
                                                      by Henry Van Dyke

Time is so precious in our life because as time passed by, we couldn't turn back time and we would feel regret if we had waste the time that is so precious. But first, do we all know what time is?
Definition of time:-
NOUN --> progress of existence and events in the past, present and future.
VERB --> plan, schedule or arrange when should happen or be done
The main problem that have connection with time and bugging most of the students is procrastination.

What is procrastination?
Procrastination means the action of delaying or postponing something. We have to know why we procrastinate in order to prevent it. So here I listed a few reasons why we procrastinate:-

1.    We are being a perfectionist
2.    We want to avoid failure
3.    Being rebellious
4.    Feeling overwhelmed by laziness
So after we have identify all the reasons of procrastination, now we can initiate ways to prevent procrastination. Let’s get to it down below:-

1.    Take a look back at our goal(s)
2.    Alert to the due date of the tasks given
3.    Plan to work on all of the assignments according to their priorities
4.    Give yourself a reward when a task is completed ;)
Now, let’s take a look at the advantage of being an organized person shall we?
1.    We would always keep track on our schedule and always meet our due date(s)
2.    Reduce stress level (we are in control of our body)
3.    Complete our works without stress
4.    Build our confidence

Happy Eidulfitri

Hi and assalamualaikum.

Ramadhan has ended and it is time to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri ! *yeay* Eid is when the Muslims could celebrate after a month of fasting. During eid, people usually wear new outfit that have variety of colours -baju kurung, kebaya, jubah and baju melayu-. People also went back to their village to celebrate eid with their family and loved ones. The women would prepare rendang and ketupat meanwhile men will help to cook lemang and to put on the light. Celebrating eid gives us a lots of fun. However, we should celebrate eid according to our ability and avoid wastage as there are people out there who cannot celebrate eid due to poverty or calamity. Lastly, I hope you guys have a great eid holiday and do not forget to study and finish your homework! Bye and happy eid :)

Ramadhan is here !

Hi and assalamualaikum. School holiday is back again. And also, the most exciting event that happened during this holiday is that the Muslims are celebrating Ramadhan, a month where we cannot eat or drink from dawn until dusk. But this entry is not about Ramadhan ((although the tittle seems to tell you about Ramadhan)) , I am going to write about interesting activities I did with my family and friends.

So actually, I do not have any interesting activity that I did with my friends as we just finished our final semester 1 examination. We does not have the chance to do anything else other than studying very hard to keep up the good grades. But, we do have fun during the Teacher's Day celebration.

The interesting activities I did with my family on the first day of Ramadhan was cooking together and perform Tarawih prayer together at the mosque. It was a memorable day for me as since I lived in the hostel I cannot celebrate the first day of Ramadhan with my family. For me, the first day of Ramadhan gives me a bit sentimental value :) I helped my mom cooked and cleaned the kitchen while my brothers and my father did their own thing.

I think that's all for this entry. Bye :)

Some questions that I need to answer

Hi. School holiday is back. As usual I have something that I need to put on my blog. For this holiday, I need to answer a few questions. So, here is the questions and my answers!

Q1: If you could have dinner with anyone from the history, who would it be?
A1: I would like to have a dinner with Marilyn Monroe and ask her a lot of questions about her career as a model, an actress and about her marriage life.

Q2: Would you rather be the best player on a horrible team or the worst player of a great team?
A2: I would rather be the best player on a horrible team because I would be the one who helped my team to be in the league as I am the best player rather than being my team's black hole.

Q3: What's your most embarrassing childhood memory?
A3: I used to wear a torn tracksuit when I was in standard 5. It was during the Sport's Day. I wore it until the end of the Sport's Day and I realized about it when I reached home. Imagine that, I am the leader of the parade for my team, Tok Lela and I marched around the field with that torn tracksuit. *sigh*

Q4: What would you do if you were invisible for a day?
A4: I would go on board of an airplane that is going to Disneyland, spent my day there and come back home ((in Malaysia)) before I become visible again.

Q5: Name a celebrity you think is lame.
A5: I don't think there is a celebrity who is lame as they are celebrity, a public figure. So, they would keep themselves update with current fashion style, worldwide issues, famous delicacies and so on.

So, that were my answers. How about you guys? Make sure you try to answer the questions and put it on the comment space :)
